A visit to Ha Giang is always a source of incredible adventures. The region impresses visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, including the dramatic cat-ear cliffs, winding paths, and the vibrant colors of local flowers that bloom across the countryside.
Beyond the stunning natural beauty, Ha Giang boasts numerous attractions such as the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, the Twin Mountains of Quan Ba, and the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark. Among these, Yen Minh shines as a captivating destination, drawing an increasing number of visitors eager to experience this gem nestled in the northern part of Vietnam.
Yen Minh, a small district bordering China, resides in the northeastern part of Ha Giang province. It shares boundaries with Yunnan district (China) to the north, Meo Vac district to the east, Quan Ba district to the west, and Bac Me district to the south. Positioned along Highway 4C, Yen Minh is approximately 98 kilometers northeast of Ha Giang city. The district encompasses a broad area of 783.65 square kilometers, which is further divided into 16 communities.
The mention of Yen Minh instantly conjures images of a calm, idyllic landscape adorned with sweeping terraced rice fields, lush pine forests, and pristine tropical rainforests, all framed by striking mountain ranges. The climate in Yen Minh enjoys a cool and pleasant climate throughout the year, a feature highlighted by Vietnam Treasure. Yen Minh Town
Spanning 783.65 square kilometers, Yen Minh is home to fifteen communes inhabited by sixteen ethnic minority groups, including the Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung, and Pu Peo. This rich ethnic mix has resulted in a cultural tapestry where customs and traditions intermingle and enrich the community.
Located approximately 98 km northeast of Ha Giang city center and about 390 km from Hanoi, a journey to Yen Minh typically takes between 4 to 5 hours. While there are currently no direct bus routes from Ha Giang to Yen Minh, the use of motorbikes or private cars is common.
The road to Yen Minh is especially appreciated by backpackers, but it presents a unique challenge with its array of slopes and sharp curves clinging to the mountainsides.
Starting from Hanoi, one can take either the Thang Long or Nhat Tan bridge towards the Hanoi – Lao Cai highway. After passing the Binh Xuyen – Vinh Phuc toll booth, follow DT 302, then DT 310, before heading to the right onto National Highway 2C, new Cau Lien section. Continue until the Doi Can T-junction, then follow National Highway 2 to Ha Giang city.
Once in Ha Giang, head along Nguyen Trai – Nguyen Van Linh. Proceed to Highway 4C, passing the Quan Ba Heaven Gate and Co Tien Mountain; Yen Minh district is roughly 30 km from here.
In Ha Giang city, numerous rental services offer prompt vehicle delivery to your accommodation. Pre-arrangement with these providers ensures a vehicle awaits your arrival, making the start of your motorbike journey particularly smooth.
When planning to explore Ha Giang by motorbike, always bring required identification such as an ID card, citizen identification, and a driver’s license. When traveling, always drive carefully and pay attention to traffic signals due to the winding and challenging roads of Ha Giang.
For those preferring bus travel to Yen Minh, buses depart from My Dinh and Giap Bat bus stations in Hanoi. The journey to Ha Giang takes around 8-9 hours, with most buses departing in the evening to arrive in Yen Minh by early morning.
For travelers coming from central or southern Vietnam, flying to Hanoi offers a time-efficient alternative. Upon arrival at Noi Bai Airport, options include taxi, private car rental, or joining a tour group for transportation to Yen Minh.
Yen Minh can be enjoyed throughout the year, thanks to its constantly cool and pleasant environment. However, based on Vietnam Treasure’s experience, the late autumn months, from October to April, are perfect. During this period, weather conditions provide a comfortable environment.
Yen Minh Town
This period is especially favored by photographers aiming to capture the distinctive buckwheat flowers that decorate the region. Yen Minh showcases magnificent displays of purple, pink, and white buckwheat flowers, carpeting the land and creating a stunning canvas that is both majestic and beautifully romantic.
Located approximately 25 km from Yen Minh town in Mau Long commune, Na Luong Cave stands out as one of the most beautiful in Ha Giang. Discovered in 2010, its grand entrance, approximately 30 meters wide, is surrounded by valuable specimens of wood. Inside, the cave features numerous compartments, stalactites and stalagmites, displaying beautiful and interesting colors and formations.
En Cave nestles deep within a rocky cliff. Its secretive location intrigues visitors. The expansive cave ceiling welcomes numerous explorers. It features a lake containing pristine water where its bottom is visible. En Cave supplies a beautiful area for camping and an intimate experience with nature.
Located about 100 km northeast of the city center along Highway No. 4, Yen Minh Pine Forest is famously called “Miniature Da Lat”. It attracts many tourists, especially young, adventure-seeking individuals. The forest, perfectly suited for camping and outdoor activities, features vertical rows of towering green pine trees. Picturesque views from a distance offer views of traditional homes of the Mong and Tay people along with highland children peacefully shepherding cows and goats.
After venturing through the pine forest, explore the peaceful environs of Du Gia village, located over 110 km from Ha Giang city. Du Gia captivates with its striking nature, majestic natural views, clear rivers and winding passes. As public transit is unavailable, motorbikes remain the only option for reaching Du Gia.
Du Gia is also renowned for its waterfalls. Spending an afternoon lounging by one these waterfalls offers a cool, natural retreat and a deep connection to the local landscape.
Pho Bang features ancient buildings and unique architecture. The paths leading here are lined with blossoming buckwheat flowers. On the route to Pho Bang, visitors will also pass rose valleys and sweeping buckwheat expanses. Pho Bang offers the direct path to Lung Cam, home to the serene Sung La valley, known for its pastoral beauty.
Tham Ma Slope, also referenced as the “Slope of the Horse,” bears its name from when locals used these strong animals to haul goods to market. Conquering Tham Ma Slope brings tourists closer to Pho Cao and links Yen Minh closely near other points of interest, offering ease of exploration.
In 2010, residents of Yen Minh discovered within Mau Long Commune a cave complex unaffected by humans. The locale has around 7 interconnected caves. The cave is about 15m high, 30m wide and many winding stalactites have grown throughout the interior that lead to tourists to imagine creative shapes.
Bats have built colonies inside the cave. According to local people, this place has 7 independent caves, independent of each other, forming an ecological cave complex.
Yen Minh Market convenes every Sunday, drawing locals from a collection of ethnic communities dressed in the unique attire that they are known for, who gather to engage with food, goods, and other market commodities here.
Sellers showcase local specialties, crafting a tapestry of culinary goods ranging from vegetables and fruits to handcrafted decorations and even livestock to trade.
While not traditionally considered a delicacy, most won’t forget the first time that they try the steamed corn meal, Men Men. For locals within the Mong community, who use local corn products, the dish provides an essential daily meal. Once the harvest reaches completion, locals prepare the corn kernels to make Men Men, then allow time for the crop to dry.
A journey to Ha Giang remains incomplete without tasting Au Tau porridge, featuring a tuber found in mountain ranges and cool climates. This porridge boasts a distinct mix of flavors and medicinal properties. It is rumored to have spicy and hot natural benefits. For generations people within the Mong tribe have used the mixture to treat symptoms of pain and the common cold. Later, the Kinh tribe enhanced the local dish with additional ingredients such as meats and eggs.
During peak flowering season, the local people find buckwheat seeds, then bake them into delicious cakes. To yield delicious textures, the seeds must first undergo drying before a manual grinding process.
Thang Co is a local Ha Giang delicacy offered specifically in regions filled with mountains. The recipe, which is also rooted in the local Mong culture, often features an enriched bone broth featuring internal organ-rich meats ranging from horses.
